Spring Forward: Time to Check (and Change) Your Smoke Detector Batteries

It’s that time of year again—daylight saving time is here, which means we all change our clocks. It’s also the perfect reminder to change the batteries in your smoke detectors. Experts recommend doing this twice a year, right when you adjust your clocks, so it becomes an easy habit.

Most newer homes have hardwired smoke detectors with battery backup. That’s great for reliability, but those batteries still need fresh ones now and then. Older homes might have hardwired detectors without batteries, or maybe just a few battery-only units scattered around. In today’s world, building codes require smoke detectors in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, in hallways on every floor, and in basements or living spaces.

The best setup is interconnected (or interlinked) detectors—so if one goes off in the kitchen, they all sound throughout the house. That gives everyone a better chance to get out safely. Even if your place only has standalone battery-operated detectors, something is better than nothing.

Smoke detectors don’t last forever. They typically have a lifespan of 8 to 10 years (check the manufacture date on the back). When it’s time, replace all of them at once with the same brand and model. Mixing different types can mess up how they communicate on the same frequency, so one detecting smoke might not trigger the others.

Look for the little indicator light on each detector—it should show they’re working. Push the test button once a month to make sure everything’s good. And if you hear that annoying chirp? That’s the low-battery warning. Swap the battery right away.

If your detectors are old, need new batteries, or aren’t set up right for your home, give us a call at Southern Chester County Electric. We can help inspect what you have, install new ones, replace batteries, or upgrade to a full interconnected system. Your family’s safety is worth it—don’t wait for the chirp or worse.

Stay safe out there!
